When Rika first walked into my classroom in 1985, she was simply another student sitting in the front row. Bright, energetic, and impossible to ignore, she quickly became one of the most memorable students I had ever taught.
What began as ordinary classroom conversations led to an invitation to help coach a college tennis club. Then came a summer training camp in the mountains, where one unexpected moment forced me to confront feelings I never intended to have.
For years, I had one personal rule:
Never become romantically involved with a student.
In this chapter, I explain how that rule was broken, how a friendship slowly became something more, and why the consequences would eventually change the course of my life.
