Michael Wertenberg | I Am Losing My Mind - Things We Lost in the Fire, my review @Michael_Wertenberg | Uploaded February 2024 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
What does it mean to be Canadian? What is a buddy read and is it a good idea? What the hell is going on in the world? These are the questions I was asking myself while reading Things We Lost in the Fire and Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego by Mariana Enriquez from 2016 and simultaneously trying to find a job as a writer. #booktube #reading #books #horrortube #horrorstory #shortstory #shortstories

I’d heard so many good things about this collection. It has over 6,000 reviews on Goodreads with an average rating of 4.07 stars! I was happy to see that the writing in this book is quite simple. It’s not simple as in it’s a book for children, but simple in that it doesn’t have the experimental nature of a Mario Vargas Llosa or the fantastical magical realism of a George Edwards or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and it doesn’t have the early 20th century heavily rural stylings of a Vicente Blasco Ibanez, some of the kinds of books I’d read in Spanish that were more challenging. In this book, the writing is simple and the stories have a very direct, straightforward narration. So, it proved to be an easy read on that front. In this video, I give a somewhat weird review of this book that many people are claiming is a disturbing book, a great work of horror, one of the best horror short story collections of the 21st century. I have a slightly different take on it.
