New Hyundai patent images may offer fresh clues about the future of the rugged Boulder off-road SUV concept. The drawings reveal a tough, boxy vehicle that looks remarkably similar to Hyundai's extreme Boulder Concept.
The design patent was filed in India on May 19, 2026, and shows an SUV with massive wheel arches, large off-road tires, short overhangs, a roof rack and a rugged front end. Several details appear more production oriented than those seen on the original concept, raising questions about what Hyundai could be planning for its future body-on-frame vehicle lineup.
Hyundai has already confirmed that the Boulder Concept previews the company's future body-on-frame direction. A new midsize Hyundai pickup truck using this type of architecture is currently expected for North America in 2029.
However, there is an important distinction. Hyundai has not confirmed a production version of the Boulder SUV, and Hyundai Motor America has stated that the Indian patent filing is not connected to a North American concept or production vehicle.
Even so, the similarities make these patent drawings extremely interesting. Could Hyundai eventually use its new body-on-frame architecture to create a serious off-road SUV alongside its future pickup truck?
