Michael Levy | Hymn to Eos (Ancient Greek Goddess of the Dawn) @MichaelLevyMusic | Uploaded March 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
Another new composition - for the recreated ancient lyre!
Eos was a Titan goddess in Greek mythology, daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia. She was the goddess of the dawn and had two siblings; Helios, god of the sun; and Selene, goddess of the moon. She was married to Astraeus, god of the dusk and together, they had numerous children that represented everything that occurred during the union of the dusk and the dawn, i.e. the twilight. Among her children were the four Anemoi (winds), as well as Eosphorus (the Morning Star) and the Astra Planeta (wandering stars or planets). She was described as having rosy fingers, a light pink gown woven with flowers, wearing a tiara and having large white-feathered wings.

In this improvised composition, I attempt to capture an evocation of the first glint of the dawn sun, by the use of a wide range of sparkly harmonics and the dreamy, sensual sounding ancient Greek Hypolydian Mode (equivalent intervals as F-F on the white notes of the piano and misnamed the 'Lydian' mode by scholars during the middle ages). The dreamy characteristics of this mode are enhanced by the use of just intonation and a subtle smattering of dreamy delays & reverbs on specific phrases of the melodic lines.
The lyre I play in this recording, is the marvellously mythological "Lyre of Thamyris" - handmade in modern Greece, by Luthieros:
