Michael Levy | The Sorcery of Circe (Improvisation for ancient Greek Tortoise Shell Lyre) @MichaelLevyMusic | Uploaded June 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
Continuing where the ancients left off - more new music, for the recreated tortoise shell lyre of classical antiquity!
Circe was a the ancient Greek goddess of sorcery (pharmakeia) who was skilled in the magic of transmutation, illusion, and necromancy. She lived on the mythical island of Aiaia (Aeaea) with her nymph companions. When Odysseus came to her island she transformed his men into beasts but, with the help of the god Hermes, he overcame her and forced her to end the spell.
In attempting to evoke through music, the sinister, magical powers of Circe, I feature in the piece, my own variation of an exotic Middle Eastern mode and add further mystery, by the use of passages of spooky-sounding playing techniques, which include the use of eerie harmonics and using the side of my carved goats horn plectrum like the hammer of a hammered dulcimer, to hit the strings instead of pluck or strum them!
The lyre featured in this presentation, was custom-made in modern Greece by Luthieros:
luthieros.com
It features a foraged Greek land tortoise shell as the resonator, a soundboard of goat skin and a carved goats horn plectrum.
This lyre can be heard on my new album in progress, currently only available on Bandcamp, "Ancient Greek Magic":

The album will become available across all the other usual digital music platforms once all the tracks have been finalized, probabaly sometime next year.
Many thanks for watching!
