This stunning North American shiner was long known in the aquarium hobby as Notropis chrosomus, but recent phylogenetic work has moved it into the genus Hydrophlox — a name meaning roughly “water flame,” perfectly matching the glowing colours of breeding males.
In nature, Rainbow Shiners come from clear, oxygen-rich streams in the southeastern USA. In the aquarium they are peaceful, active shoaling fish that do best in groups, with cool, well-filtered water, good current, open swimming space, and a gravelly setup. Their colours can shift from subtle silver-pink tones to intense blue, purple, and red during breeding conditions.
