Understanding discharge line temperature is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools an HVAC technician can have — and in this video, Ty Branaman explains why that single number could be the difference between a compressor that lives and one that dies.

Before diving into the discharge side, Ty lays the groundwork with superheat — what it actually means, how to calculate it correctly, and why a negative result is a red flag that something's off with your gauges or your math. Just like we need superheated vapor to breathe, the compressor needs to breathe it too. Feed it liquid, and things go bad fast.

That's where the discharge line becomes critical. Ty walks through the widely accepted 225°F threshold — the number technicians need to know to keep a compressor alive. Exceed it, and the oil starts breaking down, losing its ability to lubricate. Metal-on-metal friction follows, then overheating, carbon contamination, and ultimately a destroyed metering device and system. All because of one overlooked temperature.

Ty also explains how tools like measureQuick handle the heavy lifting — crunching evaporator TD, condenser TD, refrigerant type, airflow, and more to give technicians meaningful pressure ranges rather than raw numbers. Adding a third clamp to the discharge line takes that diagnostic accuracy even further. He also walks through the Copeland Mobile app for finding a designed target discharge temperature under specific operating conditions.
