Overview!
Today we'll be looking at a 2017 Husqvarna ST 224 that came into the shop with a shifting issue.
All of the Husqvarna ST models feature the same shifter, and will have the same shifting issue.
When shifting gears into forwards, the snow blower may only drive in reverse.
The issue is a design flaw in which Husqvarna doesn't grease the shifter hex shaft. They only use an anti-seize which is not a lubricant, and binds up in colder weather.
This, along with the strong return spring, overloads the shifter cable, and causes it to break.
The return spring on the friction wheel is there to allow you to still drive the snow blower if the shifter cable breaks.
However, the issue doesn't stop there...
Husqvarna also uses thin wall plastic to hold the shifter cable into position, and it may end up breaking as well. Unfortunately, this plastic is built into the under side of the plastic console, so the only option at that point is to replace the entire upper console.
Part numbers;
Shift Cable: 588122301
Base Console (With heated hand grip cutout on top left corner): Original 581131204 - Superseded to new part 581131212 (hopefully reinforced).
Here is a link to a forum where other owners had similar issues: answerarmy.com/posts/d0bf023b20
Unfortunately, it appears that these issues happen weeks, or months after the 3 year warranty expires.
Once the new console comes in, and I get everything fixed up, I'll be sure to post an update video!
