![2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Wrap Up
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially ends on November 30, showcased near-normal activity, marked by periods of very strong storms. The season fell within the predicted ranges for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes issued by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center in the August Outlook.
The Atlantic basin produced 13 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater), of which five became hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater) and four intensified to major hurricanes with winds reaching 111 mph or greater. No hurricanes made landfall in the continental U.S. for the first time since 2015. An average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
The Atlantic season was notable for its striking contrast — wavering between periods of relative calm and bursts of intense activity, generating very powerful storms. While the climatological peak of the hurricane season (September 10) was quiet with no tropical activity, the season as a whole generated three Category 5 hurricanes. No other year with similar or less total activity has had three Category 5 storms.

![NOAA Satellites Monitor Increased Storm Activity in the Atlantic and Pacific
August 20 marked the beginning of what is typically the most active portion of the Atlantic hurricane season, and NOAA satellites are closely monitoring the action. Historically, more than 85 percent of all major (Category 3, 4, and 5) Atlantic hurricanes form after this date. In fact, hurricane experts at Colorado State University even ring a bell every year to mark the occasion.
In the eastern Pacific, there also tends to be a peak in activity during late August, but it’s less pronounced than in the Atlantic. Here, relatively high levels of activity tend to be spread out over a longer portion of the season than in the Atlantic, with most tropical cyclones occurring between late June and early October.

June 2022 saw a record number of fires burning across Alaska, which have compromised air quality and stretched firefighting resources thin. Thus far, more than 1.6 million acres have been consumed, a threshold that has not been reached this early in the fire season in decades. Since 1990, there were only 11 times when a million acres of wildland burned in a single year.
This year has been an unusually active fire season in the region, with abnormally warm and dry conditions that led to more than 300 wildfires igniting in recent weeks. Many of these were sparked by nearly 5,000 lightning strikes from thunderstorms that moved across south-central and southwestern Alaska in early June.
As of June 30, 157 active fires were burning across Alaska. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation has issued air quality advisories and episodes for the Central and Eastern Interior, Southcentral, Southwest, and the Aleutians regions of the state.

After a relatively quiet start to the Atlantic hurricane season, Erin became the first hurricane of the year in the Atlantic basin on Aug.15 and rapidly intensified into a major Category 5 storm the following day. This intensification is one of the fastest on record.
