As Hurricane Lowell tracks towards Hawai'i, WHOI oceanographers are taking to the skies with the US Air Force Reserve's Hurricane Hunters!
WHOI senior scientist Steve Jayne, joined by MIT-WHOI joint program Navy students Nathan Pawlowicz and Lawrence Cen and post-doc Jacob Davis, are deploying a network of wave drifters and ALAMO floatsto capture ocean data before and during the Category 4 hurricane.
Funded by the Office of Naval Research, the SASCWATCH program combines coordinated data from ocean floats, satellites, and high-resolution models to improve hurricane forecasting.
