STORYLINE:
Hundreds of demonstrators in Baghdad gathered Saturday to protest the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and attempted to cross into a fortified area where the U.S. embassy is based.
Protesters angered by U.S. support for Israel and regional policy in the Middle East were prevented from crossing the famous Hanging Bridge on the Tigris River, which leads to the Green Zone area in the centre of Baghdad.
The Iraqi parliament condemned the killing of Nasrallah on Saturday evening.
Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for more than three decades, is by far the most powerful target to be killed by Israel in weeks of intensified fighting with Hezbollah.
The Israeli military said it carried out a precise airstrike on Friday while Hezbollah leadership were meeting at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.
The recent strikes in Lebanon and the assassination of Nasrallah are a significant escalation in the war in the Middle East, this time between Israel and Hezbollah.
