I wanted Human Host to be my kind of survival crafter.

On paper, it absolutely should be. Zombies, scavenging, base building, horde nights, traps, destructible terrain, procedural generation, eventually building vehicles. That is all stuff I usually like. I went into it hoping it would land somewhere near Night of the Dead, because I put a disgusting amount of time into that game and had a lot of fun with it despite the jank.

Human Host is not there yet.

It has potential, but it is rough in the ways that matter most for a survival crafter. The biggest problem for me is the crafting and resource balance. If building is one of your core systems, then building cannot feel like a punishment. Cutting down multiple full trees just to make one floor tile is crazy. That math does not math. I should be building a rough starter base, not deforesting half the map so I can make one tiny mud hut.

The game also does not do a great job teaching you what it wants. I do not need a giant hand-holding tutorial, but I do need the first hour to show me the basics. Tell me how to get plant fiber. Tell me what I should build first. Tell me what matters before night hits. Night of the Dead did that pretty well. It gave you direction while still letting you go off and do stupid things. Human Host kind of drops you in and says, "figure it out." That can work, but only if the systems are intuitive enough to carry that. Right now, I do not think they are.

Combat is also in a weird place. The knife felt strong early, which was nice, but the knockdown mechanic got old fast. If I am blocking with a shield, I need some way to deal with that pounce or shoulder charge. Dodge it, block it, interrupt it, something. If it just happens anyway, then it stops feeling like I got outplayed and starts feeling like the game just decided I was going on the ground now. When you are getting swarmed, that turns into a death spiral pretty quickly.

There are things I liked. Scavenging had some fun moments. Finding better gear and higher quality parts was cool. The perk system has a little bit of that roguelite flavor where you start thinking about what kind of character you are building. I liked seeing supply drops and wondering if it was worth risking the trip. I liked that the world is procedural, because that does separate it from Night of the Dead’s more static setup. There is a good idea buried in here.

But right now, the rough edges are too rough.

The UI needs work. Looting needs to be smoother. Inventory management needs quality of life. Crafting from storage should be a thing. Base sorting should be a thing. Survival crafters need to stop making inventory management the real final boss. Grounded spoiled me on this. Walk into the base, press a button, stuff goes where it belongs. At minimum, put like items into containers that already have those items. That should just be standard now.

For the price, especially if you catch it on sale under ten bucks, I do not think Human Host is some awful scam or anything. It is an early access survival game with some decent bones. If you love this genre and you do not mind rough systems, there might be enough here for you to poke at.

For me, it is a wait and see.

I want this kind of game. I want another zombie survival base defense game with traps and horde nights and dumb emergent chaos. I want Human Host to become good. But I do not think I would keep playing it or streaming it in its current state. There are too many other games fighting for that time, and this one needs more time in the oven.

I will probably check back in around six months and see what changed. If the crafting gets rebalanced, the early game gets clearer, and the knockdown mechanic gets some kind of counterplay, there could be something here.

Right now?

Interesting idea. Rough execution. Wait and see.
