Workshop Project #21 - HP 1630G Logic Analyzer
Originally, I wanted to have a turntable project, complete with portable tube amp ready for this episode, but it turns out that that needs way more than just a clean and new caps after all... so, back to another standby project!
This one is an HP 1630 Logic State Analyzer, model "G". The 1600 series of HP started in the mid 1970s with a rather simple 16-bit visualization device that used a scope tube to show a grid of 0s and 1s. Quite interesting, especially the row of 16 switches to configure the trigger...
...fast forward a few years and we have this model in early 1980s (1983-ish according to a catalog I found online) and we have a monochrome CRT with quite a bunch of ICs that move data around. The "G" model has 65 input channels, eight of which can be either state or timing capture channels; I still have to read up on the timing thingy, haven't tried that one out yet.
The general idea is to visualize correlated logic levels. This enables board level debugging of microcontroller/microprocessor based circuits and is a huge benefit when dealing with these kind of products.
I was lucky enough to find this unit for rather cheap, again, untested. What does it hold in store for us? Let's find out!
