Externally side-chained compression is a powerful mixing technique that opens up a lot of creative possibilities, too. It's super easy to use once you know how to set it up. Learn how to do it in less than 5 minutes. Connect with me on Facebook: facebook.com/sahergalt
External side-chain compression means a signal other than the track you're compressing triggers compression. Use it to create ducking, pumping and other rhythmic effects.
I demonstrate it here using FabFilter's Pro-C: go.magik.ly/ml/3gdd
Another side chain compression tip: You can use the filter on the INTERNAL sidechain if you want the compressor to trigger only on certain frequencies of the track you're compressing. For example, you can have the compressor trigger on everything but the kick on a drum bus by filtering everything below 500hz on the internal side chain, or you can target certain frequencies of a vocal in the same manner (this is a beginning principle of a de-esser).
