Part 2 of a 5-part series on working with 3D scans in Autodesk Fusion.
Josiah Fallaise of FDF Raceshop takes a single 3D scan of a full front suspension and breaks it into separate parts that actually move. He starts by showing the finished result: a suspension assembly with travel, articulation, and enough accuracy to measure 29 degrees of steering angle directly in Fusion. Then he builds it from the raw scan.
The constraint is the interesting part. You would normally scan every component individually, and Josiah recommends that. This video assumes you only have one scan of the whole corner and shows how far you can get anyway.
He covers reducing the mesh so Fusion can handle the work, building a three-point plane off flat sheet metal, using a mesh section sketch and fit curves to find the steering rack centerline, and constraining the whole scan to the origin at the center of the car. From there he separates the sway bar out of the scan by breaking the triangle chain, turns it into its own component, builds a rotation axis and bushing, and adds a revolute joint so it swings on its own.
Josiah designs and manufactures suspension components that run on race cars, so these methods are built around parts that have to fit.
