🤔 What are nested subdivisions?
Every rhythm pattern has accented beats—usually a mix of longer and shorter ones. 🎵
With nested subdivisions, we keep those accents in the same places, but change the number of subdivisions between them.
By maintaining the relationship between the long and short beats, we can "squeeze" our way into many different time signatures while preserving the overall feel. 🔄
In this example, I started with the common 4/4 grouping 3+3+2 (8 eighth notes) ➡️ and expanded it to 4+4+3 (now it's 11! 😎)
You could similarly do 5+5+3 or 7+7+4, as long as you preserve the shape of the original pattern. 🥁
