LEG TRAINING WITH A TORN MENISCUS 🦵💥
Well, I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but yours truly tore his meniscus TWO DAYS before our wedding… rehearsing our first dance.
You seriously can’t make this sh*t up, folks. 😂
So, I can do one of two things:
1️⃣ Sit on the “pity pot” and completely stop training legs.
2️⃣ MODIFY MY TRAINING and continue pushing hard — just intelligently.
If you know me, you already know which one I’m choosing.
While I’m regularly treating the knee with tools like BFR, shockwave therapy, dry needling + e-stim, laser, Neubie e-stim, and voodoo floss, I’m also making some important changes to my actual training:
• Hamstring curls FIRST — something I normally do anyway, but I’m putting even more emphasis on posterior-chain work right now.
• BFR before traditional quad work — allowing me to challenge the quads hard with significantly lighter loads.
• Avoiding deep knee flexion — working within ranges my knee currently tolerates instead of forcing depth just for the sake of it.
• Smarter exercise selection — like this banded reverse V-squat, performed more hip-dominant than I would normally use it.
• Anatomy in Motion foot wedges when appropriate — improving my foot mechanics can have a huge impact upstream on how my knee feels and functions.
• Purposeful, controlled reps — including a deliberate pause and reset at the top of each repetition.
• Chasing reps instead of load — most of my working sets right now are 20+ reps. Lighter weight does NOT mean easy.
• And finally, accepting some discomfort. My goal isn’t necessarily to make every single rep completely pain-free. I’m finding a level of discomfort that I personally consider acceptable while continuing to train intelligently.
Finding ways to train despite injuries is something I’ve had to do throughout my entire 18-year lifting career — and now helping other people do the same is literally what I do for a living.
MODIFY. DON’T ELIMINATE.
If an injury is keeping you from training the way you want to, let’s figure out what you CAN do — and build from there.
