How to Tie the Reef Knot Just the Knot Less Chat
The Reef Knot or also known as the Square Knot, is probably one of the first knots that we learn to tie. However, what we are not taught is what we should use the reef knot for. The reef knot is considered as a good secure general purpose knot. BUT, people should be aware of the dangers of relying on a Reef Knot as a good secure knot.

In Ashley's Book of Knots, the Reef Knot has the most Skull and Crossbones next to it's name, each time it is referenced. It is also mentioned that the Reef Knot should NEVER be used as a bend (joining of two ropes). The Reef Knot over it's history has failed far too many times.

So, what is the Reef Knot used for? Sailors use the Reef Knot for reefing and furling sails. As a bushcraft knot, the Reef Knot is good for tying together bundles of wood, or perhaps a bed roll. In the world of first aid, the Reef Knot is useful as a knot for sling to support an arm, It is strong enough to support the arm and also has the advantage that the knot lays flat around the neck.

I wonder if the Reef Knot is used in anyway by climbers?

The Reef Knot is a really useful knot to know, but be aware of it's limitations.
