The Packer's Knot is an extremely useful knot for tying up bundles and also for tying up bed rolls, or bulky tarpaulins when you want them to stay rolled up and remain rolled up when stored or carried.
At the moment there is a growing popularity in Zip Tie Knots, they are easy to tie and will hold rolled up items firmly in place. Then when the item needs to be unrolled the zip lock feature of the knot is very easy to undo. The Packer's Knot is not too dissimilar to the Butcher's Knot also known as the Canadian Jam Knot.
The Packer's knot can be considered as:
Zip Lock Type Knot
Zip Ties Type Knot
Cable Tie Type Knot
Due to the Figure of Eight formation that forms part of the Packer's Knot, makes it less prone to jamming and easy to undo. Part of the Packer's Knot is the Half Hitch that is formed by the standing part around the protruding working end. This locks the whole knot in place, preventing it from coming undone.
Ashley's Book of Knots 187. "The Packer’s Knot. This knot is sometimes used in baling and in parcel tying and is perhaps the most practical of Boned and Rolled Roast Knots, for which purpose it is the one generally tied by the more skilful butchers. It is, however, hardly secure enough for a Corned Beef Knot, The end has a nice lead and the completed knot is compact and neat."
