What is a Hysteroscopy? A hysteroscopy (or uterine endoscopy) is a minor day-care procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus. While it is highly effective, it is completely normal to experience some minor pain or cramping after the procedure is finished.
How to Prepare for the Procedure:
To ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible, here are the essential preparation steps you need to follow:
Timing: Try to schedule your procedure at a time when you are not actively bleeding.
Medication: Your doctor may prescribe medications to help dilate (open) the mouth of the uterus. These should typically be taken 3 to 4 hours prior to the procedure.
Infection Control: You may be given vaginal tablets to prevent infection, which must be inserted the night before your appointment.
Fasting: If your hysteroscopy is being performed under general anesthesia, you must remain on an empty stomach (no food or water) for at least 6 to 8 hours beforehand.
Hygiene & Grooming: The perineum area must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared. It is highly recommended to clip the hair in this area before heading to the clinic.
Recovery & Discharge:
Because a hysteroscopy is an efficient day-care procedure, you will likely be discharged and allowed to head home on the very same day.
