The amount of fresh water you have on hand in your fresh water tank is generally going to be the limiting factor for how long you can go stay in one spot or travel around before you need to find someplace to hook up and refill your fresh water tank. So, having a simple, convenient strategy for keeping that tank filled is going to help keep you ultra-mobile. The strategy I use is called "opportunity filling".
Opportunity filling is so simple and so basic that once you learn it you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. Basically, you carry around a couple collapsible water jugs like these: This is a 10 liter or 2.5 gallon jug and this one is a 5 liter or 1 and a quarter gallon jug. These jugs are super convenient because they fold down to nothing when you don't need them and can be tucked away almost anywhere without taking up much space. When you fill them with water they expand out and these ones that I use have a handle at the top, an on/off spigot and a little handle at this other end which makes it easy to pour water. That'll come in handy in a second.
So how do I use them? Well, whenever I'm at a restaurant or gas station or any place with available water I take my 2 gallon jug to the faucet and fill it up. Then I return to the RV, attach this little spout and dump it into my fresh water tank. I've instantly replenished 10% of the capacity of my fresh water tank which is 20 gallons on my Ascent. I didn't need to find a rest stop or a gas station. I didn't need to deal with a long, cumbersome hose. I just filled up this little jug and dumped it into my tank. You do that a couple times and pretty soon you've replenished your fresh water tank with 5 or so gallons. That's why I call it opportunity filling. You fill up whenever you see an opportunity. It's fast, easy and you get a lot of bang for the effort.
You can do the same thing with the one gallon jug. It's even smaller and easier to carry around but I use mine for drinking water. I just keep this gallon jug topped off all the time and over time that saves me gallons of fresh water. See, opportunity filling. Between the larger 2.5 gallon jug and this 1 gallon jug I can extend my fresh water supply and hence my boondocking time by days or even weeks. My limiting factor now becomes my black water tank and we'll talk about that in another episode.
Give my opportunity filling strategy a go. I think you'll find it super easy to do and the results well worth it.
