How to Measure Gravity and Earth's Rotation In this video, I explain the underlying physics and connect the equations and concepts to observations that make the idea testable.
Today we use the actual measurements from the Foucault Pendulum at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago to measure Gravity, Rotation of Earth and the Location of Chicago on the Globe (Latitude). The only other information we need is the length of the pendulum (available on line).
These are simple measurements and by using basic math, we can get results that are within 1% of the standard, accepted values. All for the price of admission to the museum and a stopwatch.
Specs: Free swinging pendulum with no sustainer motor/magnet
19.656 m pendulum (64.5 feet)
bob is 16" brass and has a mass of 650 pounds (295Kg)
built 1939
period 8.875 seconds, 3 degree swing
Precession 35.71 hours
