Make sea salt from ocean water using only a campfire! We'll also show you how to make garlic powder & pepper.
This weekend we headed out to the ocean, grabbed a few gallons of sea water and turned it into salt! Using only a Dutch Oven on a campfire, we evaporated the water to harvest the sea salt. We also made our own pepper and garlic powder. Watch until the end to see our surprise dinner guests.
With just a few gallons of sea water you can harvest enough sea salt to last you for a year. Salt can be used for curing meats and fish, and also fermenting vegetables. You can also make garlic powder and pepper by dehydrating your own garden vegetables for free!
Salt's ability to preserve food was a founding contributor to the development of civilization. It helped eliminate dependence on seasonal availability of food and made it possible to transport food over large distances.
In Roman times, and throughout the Middle Ages, salt was a valuable commodity, also referred to as "white gold." This high demand for salt was due to its important use in preserving food, especially meat and fish. Being so valuable, soldiers in the Roman army were sometimes paid with salt instead of money.
