Here is a way to make ferric chloride that is used for etching steel by blacksmiths. You need hydrochloric acid (muriatic or pool acid) and steel wool. Reacting steel wool with pool acid gives ferrous chloride, which will turn to ferric chloride with exposure to the air.

This must be done in a well ventilated area due to corrosive fumes. You should use gloves and eye protection.

Do not use an aluminium pot or container. The acid will dissolve it.
Use pyrex or other heat rated glass.
