Supply list:
BASIC RECIPE:
-1 cup (8oz) baking soda (grocery store)
-1/2 cup (4oz) Epsom salts (drug store)
-1/2 cup (4oz) corn starch (grocery store)
-1/2 cup (4oz) citric acid (grocery store in canning section, online or homemade cosmetic store)
-2 tablespoons (15ml) carrier oil of choice. Jojoba, castor or sweet almond (online, Walmart or handmade cosmetic store)
-3-5 teaspoons (24ml) water
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS:
-6-12 drops essential oil (online or handmade cosmetic store)
-1 Tablespoon natural clay colorant or 2-8 drops nature liquid colorant (online or handmade cosmetic store)
-1 Tablespoon solubilized (polysorbate 20) (online or handmade cosmetic store)
-mixing bowls
-measuring cups and measuring spoons
-whisk
-small canning jar to mix up liquids and additives
-bath bomb molds
DIRECTIONS:
-First mix baking soda, epsom salts and corn starch in a large bowl with a whisk or your hands removing any lumps.
-Mix oil, polysorbate 20, liquid colourant if using and essential oil together in a mason jar and shake vigorously.
-Slowly add the liquid to the dry, mixing while adding the liquid with a whisk.
-Now add in the citric acid and mix in thoroughly.
-Add water 1 tsp at a time and mix quickly after each addition.
-Mix with your hands or a whisk until it looks like damp sand. This is the sensitive portion to making bath bombs. You need just the right amount of water and not a drop more!
-Add rose petals or lavender to the bottom of a mold and top with mixture. -Press down a bit to adhere flower petals to mixture.
-You now have 30 minutes to make your bath bombs before mixture starts to dry out.
-Fill both sides of mold generously with mixture but not over packed and squeeze together. You should feel a bit of resistance when squeezing the mold together.
-Open this first mold for a test. If it falls apart in your hand then you need to add a tad more water to your mixture.
-If time allows, let it rest for 1 minute before releasing the mold. Do not twist it open but just pry apart at the seams.
-Remove from mold and place on wax paper and make the next bomb. -Rotate your bombs so they don’t get flat spots on the edges.
-Let dry overnight or for two days before packaging
NOTE:
After taking an epsom salt bath or with a bath bomb, you should always finish with a clean water rinse. And remember to hydrate and drink some water.
Troubleshooting:
-HOW MUCH WATER TO ADD:
Everyone will have to add a different amount of water depending on where you live in the world and if it is humid or dry.
-BATH BOMB BLISTERING or CRACKING:
You added to much water and the bath bomb started to activate
-BATH BOMB IS POWDERY:
You needed to add more water
-Oil IS POOLING ON TOP OF THE WATER:
You didn’t add polysorbate 20 to your mix
-BATH BOMBS SINK TO BOTTOM OF TUB:
Bath bomb is still wet and needs more drying time or you over packed the bomb and it is too heavy.
