In this video, I take a piece of spalted beech and turn it into my own interpretation of a medieval helmet. This one was all about creativity and having fun—letting the shape evolve on the lathe and leaning into the natural spalting to give the piece a sense of age and history.
The main form was turned on my Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe using Easy Wood Tools carbide turning tools. To add more character and really sell the helmet idea, I used a Dremel to carve the front opening, giving it that unmistakable medieval look.
The piece was finished with Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste to smooth everything out and highlight the spalting and grain. A fun woodturning art project that blends history, imagination, and turning into something a little different from the usual bowls and vessels.
