This project pushed both my skills and nerves: turning a huge Maple crotch platter outboard on a Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe. Working with a crotch section of Maple brings incredible, unpredictable grain and figure—but at this scale, mounted outboard, it was definitely a scary task that demanded focus, patience, and respect for the wood and the lathe.
The platter was shaped using Easy Wood Tools carbide woodturning tools, which provided the control and confidence needed when dealing with such a large, unbalanced blank. Careful, steady cuts allowed the natural crotch figure to emerge while maintaining a strong, flowing platter form.
To finish the piece, lemon oil was applied, enriching the color and chatoyance of the Maple and allowing the dramatic grain patterns to really pop. The final result is a bold, eye-catching platter that celebrates the wild beauty of Maple crotch wood—and a reminder that sometimes the most intimidating projects are the most rewarding to finish.
