Learn to knit the dip stitch! This simple technique creates an elongated V on the right side of the fabric as well as a sort of eyelet effect at the base of each V.
This stitch can create some interesting patterns when worked in multiple colors, as in Jared Flood’s Kitelines hat pattern, which uses dip stitches that are offset on each round to create a lattice motif.
0:47 To form the dip stitch, work until the place you want the V to sit, then insert your right needle from front to back in between the stitch just worked and the next one, under the top two strands of yarn between the needles. Then wrap the working yarn around your needle and pull up a loop as if to knit, and place that loop on your right needle.
2:59 Each dipped stitch will increase your stitch count by one, so you’ll eventually need to resolve this to avoid changing the width of the fabric.
First, work one row in stockinette stitch, slipping all your dipped stitches purlwise with the yarn to the wrong side.
4:09 If working in two colors, switch colors and work to one stitch before the first dipped stitch. Slip the next 2 stitches together as if to knit, then transfer what is now the first stitch on the right needle back to the left needle and knit 2.
Then use your left needle to pass the third stitch on the right needle (the dipped stitch) over the 2 stitches just knit and off the right needle. This places the dip stitch on the front of the fabric as the V that you see, centered over the two stitches from between which it was pulled. You’ll repeat this to resolve the other dipped stitches on your needle, which will restore your previous stitch count.
