PART 1 of 5 // Interview your “family” and document their experiences before they’re gone.

It’s Black History Month in the United States so I decided to lean back into my storytelling roots for this series. I want to see more diverse stories told across all platforms so I’m laying out some of my best interviewing tools and tricks to capture your friends, relatives, community and family members as authentically as possible.

I remember when I got my first camcorder for Circuit City, I loved to follow my parents around and document everything they were doing — not realizing I was essentially vlogging 😅. I’ve always been obsessed with keeping a record through video, but that was intensified after Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland.

I wanted to document a holistic version of myself and decided to use my channel and socials as a public record so that way if I ever became a hashtag (for all the wrong reasons) there would be an unabridged primary source account of my existence.

If you want to watch some of my past short documentaries that feature my family, check out the link in my bio for a nifty playlist. I’ll see you with my first tip tomorrow!
