Paying attention is hard. But it’s also a skill you can develop. So what can you do to get better at it?
In this video, I share an easy hack to increase your attention span.
I’ve found that growing your ability to focus and pay attention pays dividends in all aspects of your life. You’ll be a better friend, partner, and parent. Because people love to be seen and heard. And you’ll find inspiration and joy in small things: the smell of freshly baked bread, the bus driver who waits for a running passenger.
One reason why it’s often hard to concentrate on what we’re doing is that, once we’ve repeated a behavior a number of times, it becomes a habit. Habits serve an important purpose, by conserving energy used by your brain. But by living on autopilot too much, you’re potentially missing out on the richness of life. Efficiency doesn’t necessarily equate to a life rich in emotional experiences.
But you can train your ability to focus and pay attention. To be more present in the moment. The exercise in this video is deceivingly simple: you can do it any day, anywhere!
