Learn how to grow shallots in this guide, with Petra from Fruition Seeds. Late fall is the perfect time of year to plant shallots, and in this video, Petra walks us through the steps she takes to plant, grow and harvest her organic Dutch shallots (Allium cepa var. aggregatum).

Did you know that shallots multiply in the ground, like garlic? Yes! Plant one shallot bulb, and by early summer, you’ll have a bunch of shallots ready to harvest. How long do shallots take to grow? You’re looking at between 100 - 120 days.

So if you have your shallot bulbs in hand (best to buy shallot “sets” from your local nursery — you can be more sure of their growth than shallots from the grocery store), let’s get started!

Do you grow shallots? Do you plant in late fall or early spring? Let us know in the comments below.

Watch to the end for expert tips on when to harvest shallots and pro tips for drying shallots.

Gardenstead is an online gardening community and plant lovers channel of gardeners who love to get their hands dirty, both indoors and outdoors. Our gardeners run the gamut. They are vegetable gardeners, houseplant nurturers, small space gardening engineers, herbalists, flower enthusiasts and succulent aficionados.

Our goal has always been to connect gardeners in an inclusive gardening community, foster and share knowledge, and make gardening resources available to everyone.

As we grow, we seek to expand our conversations about gardening and to
cultivate a mindful embrace of nature and the healing and grounding properties
to be found in it.

Plants cultivate connections between people — from urban settings of balcony gardens
and small spaces to rural backyards with larger and more expansive gardens. We hope
you’ll join us as we continue to nurture these connections and create new ones.
