This video is about how to get the tone of Randy Rhoads. How to play like him is beyond my reach though... I'm very happy with the tonal results here though!! Randy used a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom with stock Gibson pickups and a Flying V (Polka dot) with a DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup in the bridge. I'm gonna use a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge here. Randy used a MXR Distortion + for the solos ( I have to assume it was only the solos since his rhythm playing is so percussive and the MXR makes the tone a bit rounder). I'm only gonna cover rhythm so I'm not plugging it in here (I'd love to do a separate video of that though). I'm using a Marshall Super Lead MkI for this but he used a MkII (further down there is a link for a video where Simon and I demonstrates his reissues stack though). I'm plugging the Super Lead into a 1x12 Cab with an Altec Lansing 417-8H Series II speaker. I'm attenuating thing signal a bit with an Iron Man II in order to be able to close mic with a condenser. Randy's dry recorded guitar tone most likely needed some post EQ on the desk though. We're recreating that here using the Cubase EQ matching tool. We're using the the original isolated tracks of Randy on the links below to do do that.
