There were some bad patches done in a bathroom ceiling. Instead of trying to blend the patches with the existing California Knock Down texture, I skimmed out the ceiling flat and painted it. Flat painted ceilings are a much better option in wet areas and I used a wipeable high quality paint.
Some of the patched weren't taped but were pretty sold, so I used fibre mesh tape. I coated the mesh tape with a 20 minute fast set drywall compound.
Once the compound was set, I gave it a quick scrape to get rid of any high spots.
I skimmed out the entire ceiling with 45 minute fast set drywall compound. I applied just enough to cover the texture and a little extra in bad spots or around the patches. I let that coat dry over night.
I scraped and sanded the ceiling the next day. I used 120 grit sandpaper.
I did a light skim coat with Lite Topping Compound. There is less glue in the topping mud than all purpose which makes it easier to get a nice finished coat.
Once that dries, I sand with 180 grit.
Apply a stain blocking primer. I usually do any touch ups once it's dry using the topping mud or a spackling paste. Let the patches dry, sand them and the rest of the primer.
Apply 2 coats of high quality paint. I used a 100% acrylic flat paint that is wipeable. There are paints made for kitchen and bath but they usually come in eggshell or semi gloss. It is easier to wipe but will not hide defects as well.
I pulled the tape off when the last coat was still wet. The corners may be a little rough from all the build up so I hit them with some paintable white caulking.
