I never use a stud finder! If I do ever find the thing the batteries are dead, so I have learned over the years a few tricks to find a stud without one. Even if you do use a stud finder, you should use these techniques to double check that you are in the right spot. These tricks are great for drywall houses but can work for plaster house, it is just a bit tougher.
