If you got a faulty BIOS update, here’s a way to fix it. In my case, Microsoft decided to update my computer without my consent, and the update went south. My computer remained at a black screen. Not even the splash screen was visible anymore. I didn’t boot anymore. It only had a black screen.
If your laptop isn’t a relic, you might be able to fix a faulty BIOS update. In my case, I google the BIOS update from another computer and downloaded the BIOS update file from the official website. I downloaded the flash utility. The file won’t be the .exe file. It was a 418 file. I extracted the contents of the ZIP on the root of my USB. Each laptop brand has a different name. such as ASUS has EZ Flash, MSI M-Flash, or Gigabyte Q-Flash.
Anyway, download the flash utility. It should be a zip file. Extract the contents of the zip file inside the root of the USB. The root meaning to not put it in any folder. Just leave it onto the USB.
And also you need a FAT32 USB. To make sure you have the right one, right click on the usb, go to properties and under general see if it’s FAT32. If it isn’t, right click on the USB, go to format and see if from the drop down menu you have the option for FAT32. It yes, then press to quick format, but WARNING, this will delete everything on the USB. So back up the files before formatting.
If you don’t have the FAT32 option, then you need to keep trying other USBs. Unfortunately, I noticed that newer USBs don’t have the FAT32 option, only exFAT and NTFS. Try an older USB, the odds of finding a FAT32 are higher.
OK. Once you have copied the files, with the computer closed, insert the USB and then power on the computer. If the screen remains black, have patience, the BIOS screen should appear. Now follow the on screen instructions to install the new BIOS firmware. I can’t help you with the exact steps here, as I don’t know what computer brand you have.
Anyway, this is how you get image back and fix the BIOS and the boot. I hope this video helped!
If you get this screen after the BIOS update and press Y, you won’t be able to login with your PIN or your fingerprint anymore. As they get corrupted. To get into Windows, you can enter via your account password.
Now, what was the problem in my case is that the NGC folder got corrupted. That folder stores the PIN and fingerprint data. And as long as that folder is corrupted, Windows doesn’t let you set up a new PIN.
To spare you the trial and error, here’s what worked for me.
Search for cmd and open it as an administrator.
Now type
takeown /f "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC" /r /d y
then type in
icacls "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC" /grant administrators:F /t
and then
rd /s /q "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC"
If rd fails, delete contents first:
del /f /s /q "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC\*"
Then restart your computer.
After the restart, if you go to set up a new PIN or fingerprint it will let you.
