How to Fix AirPods Static, Crackling, Low Volume & Cutting Out Sound
If your AirPods are making static noises, crackling sounds, popping, have low volume, or keep cutting out, the problem is usually caused by dirty microphones, Bluetooth interference, incorrect settings, or a connection issue.
1. Clean Your AirPods
Dirt and earwax can block the speakers and microphones.
Clean:
Speaker mesh
Microphone openings
Charging contacts
Use:
A soft, dry toothbrush
Microfiber cloth
Cotton swab
Avoid using sharp objects that can damage the AirPods.
2. Restart Bluetooth Connection
Open Settings on your iPhone.
Tap Bluetooth.
Turn Bluetooth Off.
Wait about 10 seconds.
Turn Bluetooth back On.
Reconnect your AirPods.
3. Check AirPods Volume Settings
On your iPhone:
Go to Settings.
Tap Sounds & Haptics.
Adjust the volume.
Check:
Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual
Make sure the Balance slider is centered.
4. Turn Off Automatic Ear Detection (Test)
Sometimes sensors can cause audio interruptions.
Open Settings.
Tap Bluetooth.
Tap the i next to your AirPods.
Turn Automatic Ear Detection off.
Test the AirPods.
5. Disable Audio Features to Test
Try temporarily turning off:
Noise Cancellation
Transparency Mode
Adaptive Audio
If the crackling stops, the issue may involve the microphones used for these features.
6. Reset Your AirPods
Put both AirPods in the charging case.
Close the lid for 30 seconds.
Open the lid.
Hold the button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds.
Wait until the light flashes:
Amber/orange
Then white
Pair your AirPods again.
7. Reduce Bluetooth Interference
AirPods can cut out near strong wireless interference.
Try:
Moving away from WiFi routers.
Disconnecting unused Bluetooth devices.
Keeping your phone close to your AirPods.
Testing in another location.
8. Update Your iPhone
Older software can cause Bluetooth problems.
Open Settings.
Tap General.
Tap Software Update.
Install available updates.
If Only One AirPod Has Static or Low Volume
Try:
Cleaning that AirPod's speaker mesh.
Checking left/right audio balance.
Charging both AirPods fully.
Resetting the AirPods.
If AirPods Still Crackle or Cut Out
Possible causes:
Damaged speaker driver
Failing battery
Microphone hardware issue
Internal hardware failure
These fixes work for AirPods Pro 1, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and many other AirPods models. #airpods
