About this video: When modded Minecraft crashes, the error message you get usually does not make it obvious which mod caused the problem. In this video, we show you how to find the crash report or log Minecraft generated, figure out which mod is responsible, and use that information to actually fix the crash instead of guessing and removing mods one-by-one.
The first place to check is your Minecraft installation folder. Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to “Installations”, find the modded installation that is crashing, and click the folder icon next to it. Inside that folder, look for “crash-reports” and open the newest crash report. If there is a recent one, move it to your desktop so it is easy to find.
Minecraft does not always create a crash report though. If that folder does not have anything from your latest crash, open the “logs” folder instead. Scroll down until you find “latest.log” and move that file to your desktop. This log records what Minecraft was doing leading up to the crash, which means it can usually point you toward what actually went wrong.
Reading through the entire file manually can be difficult, especially with larger modpacks. An easier method is to upload the crash report or latest.log file to ChatGPT and ask why your Minecraft instance is crashing. In the example from this video, the log shows that Sodium is installed for the wrong Minecraft version. Minecraft is running 26.2, while the installed Sodium version is for 26.1.1.
Once you know which mod is causing the problem, fixing it is usually a matter of updating that mod to the correct version or removing it. The log can also reveal other issues that are not currently stopping Minecraft from launching. In our case, Just Enough Items is also on the wrong version, so that can be corrected at the same time.
This process also works when troubleshooting modded Minecraft servers. Server logs can be analyzed the same way to find incompatible mods and other errors. Some crashes involving entities or specific chunks can be more complicated, but identifying the actual error in the log gives you a much better place to start.
