Today I spoke with Black Atheist Rants, who placed his faith in Jesus as a young man, but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Growing up with Christianity presented as a total worldview, leaving no space to question or explore alternatives.
• Noticing that exposure to no other religions or philosophies kept him sheltered in a Christian-only bubble.
• Being constantly told “Jesus is always watching you," but realizing it was about surveillance and fear disguised as love.
• Recognizing that childhood indoctrination can feel joyful and communal at the time, even as it is planting seeds of trauma.
• Understanding that suffering and poverty were presented as proof of God’s testing and favor.
• Applying critical thinking for survival in life but never being allowed to apply the same questioning to faith.
• Discovering through philosophy class that it was acceptable to ask ultimate questions about meaning, truth, and belief.
• Reading the Bible seriously for the first time and being shaken by the brutality of slavery passages.
• Encountering atheist voices and realizing that personal experience alone is not reliable evidence for truth claims.
• Deconverting from Christianity and feeling free from the mythology and lies but facing ostracization and shunning from Christians.
• Rebuilding his identity after escaping Christianity.
