*Why So Much Soot?*
My heater burns gasoline instead of diesel fuel. I pushed it pretty hard once while camping at 10,000 feet elevation. When it stopped working I blew out some soot with an air compressor. Then it worked again. The excessive soot was probably left over from that time period. More soot is likely to be created when the heater is run on low for long periods of time. TIP: Run it on HIGH for a few hours periodically.
