Simply set a timer for 5 minutes and have child pick up all of one item, such as shoes/ toys/ clothing/ etc. If the child is working then allow them an additional 5 minutes. If they are playing, gather that item and store it in the basement or closet in "time out" for one day. Don't take away items for too long, they are just kids afterall.
