Here, Matthias shows the art of drawing, hand carving and letter cutting into limestone using Tungsten chisels and a dummy (a letter carving mallet).
This was filmed at our Heritage Building Skills Programme Summer School in 2024, where our apprentices and trainees learned a range of craft skills from heritage construction experts.
This programme is a major 5-year in-work training and apprenticeships scheme in the North of England, running until 2026.
There is a shortage of specialist heritage construction skills in England. Apprenticeships provide hands-on training in trades such as carpentry and joinery, stonemasonry and plastering.
Learning these crafts will help to preserve and protect the heritage that matters to us all, so it lives on and is loved for longer.
