"Letterboxing" began in 1854 when James Perrott created a place where visitors could leave messages for one another.
It developed into a popular pastime that used clues and grid references from a Letterbox Catalogue to locate hundreds of hidden boxes across the moor.
It later influenced the emergence of geocaching, which uses modern technology to locate hidden features through clues.
This letterbox at Cranmere Pool was built in 1937 near the site of the first 1854 letterbox (which is no longer there). It's now been listed at Grade II, so it can be loved for longer.
