Vance Crowe | How to calm down an argument by mirroring @VanceCrowePodcast | Uploaded July 2024 | Updated October 2024, 49 minutes ago.
Sometimes you can have a disagreement with someone that you love that escalates into a fight.
To calm down the situation, try a technique called mirroring.
Mirroring focuses on listening and gives you and the other person you're arguing with a path to resolving the conflict.
First, calm the conversation by quietly saying, "Let me see if I understand what you're telling me." Then repeat back to them exactly what you heard them say.
The goal is to not only recite what they said but for them to agree that you understand them. If they disagree or add to what they said, mirror again until you reach an agreement.
Then double-check by asking, "Is there anything else?" If there is, mirror until all of their cards are on the table. If the other person feels heard, they are likely to soften their position and be interested in what you have to say.
Mirroring will slow down arguments and illuminate what needs to be discussed so that you can solve the problem together.
