The secret is in the breathing!
When your abs are super tight, it’s really hard to breathe, right?
That’s because we can’t push the belly out to make all this space for our lungs to fill with air.
So instead of pushing the belly out or focusing on a low breath in general, P!nk needed to find space somewhere else in her body to get in enough breath to sing through the chorus of her song.
This is why we can’t just say that breathing low is always the best thing for singing.
It really depends on the singer and the circumstance.
And no, I’m not saying that you should now go and practice singing with someone standing on your stomach or while doing a plank…
Or to start lifting your shoulders when you’re breathing in to make more space (not how that works, that’ll just add neck tension!)…
But start exploring where you’re feeling most comfortable with your breath.
For me, it’s the appoggio breath - a little bit of air everywhere to get a 360 expansion in the rib cage.
Thank you to our amazing coach Emily from our team for breaking down the different ways to inhale and explain why P!nk can do this!
