Ultimate Handyman | How to block a pipe that cannot be frozen | Aladdin Pipe Genie @ultimatehandyman | Uploaded May 2018 | Updated October 2024, 6 days ago.
In this video I test out the pipe genie, which is a prototype kit. This kit will hopefully be commercially available in the next few months. Sometimes a pipe freezing kit cannot be used and so the Pipe Genie has been developed for use on pipes that contain hot water, flowing water or water at high pressure. Eventually this kit will be developed for steel pipes up to 4 inches in diameter.

Here are a few benefits of the system-

The Pipe Genie is a professional tool comparable with an electric freezer kit but better because:
It blocks the pipe more effectively (hot and high pressure pipe work), and controllably.
It can block 'moving water' , the main reason freezing fails is the ice plug doesn't take as the water is moving - you only find this out when you cut the pipe.
Blocks at much higher pressures - freezer equipment manufacturers state up to 8 bar (see Rothenberger website) but the Genie goes up to over 30 bar
Blocks hot pipe work so no need to cool heating systems - a real advantage for hospitals and nursing homes with large heating systems and shared accommodation - hospitals for example can’t switch off their systems.
You can block during a flood for example leaking fitting or pipe work, whereas you cannot freeze as water is moving.
On hot days freeze doesn't take or natural convection currents in large systems cause moving water - a real problem we hear from plumbing maintenance companies.
You can block the pipe as long as you want - you're not against the clock – you can even leave the job and come back and the pipe will remain blocked.
You just need 30mm of pipe length on 15 mm and 40 mm on 22 - sometimes all the space you have on pipes - a freeze jacket is 3x this length .
If you change system component and you need to rework it as pipework/valve is leaking you can re- block immediately as you can leave the bung fitted - and introduce flow slowly to test the system - and block if it starts leaking - this can't be done with freezing as is all or nothing as you let the ice plug melt it 'all goes' if the repair isn't sound
