TEDx Talks | How to avoid sameness in your business | Denise Haak | TEDxAyala Avenue Women @TEDx | Uploaded 2 days ago | Updated 1 day ago
In todays world, there exists a subtle but pervasive issue that inhibits innovation and diversity: the problem of *Sameness*.

In this TEDx talk, Denise draws from personal experiences, tracing the decline of women in Computer Science and reflecting on her time at Google and as a startup founder, to explore how conformity and lack of diversity can stifle creativity, critical thinking, and genuine progress.

The talk introduces the concept of Sameness, which arises when people from similar backgrounds develop similar ideas, limiting innovation.

From educational environments dominated by uniformity to venture capitalists looking for cookie-cutter startups, Sameness is a systemic issue that prevents the emergence of distinctiveness and fresh perspectives.

Denise then outlines how they intentionally subverted Sameness in their own company through five key practices: removing rigid qualifications, flattening hierarchies, avoiding assumptions, rejecting arrogance, and eliminating work restrictions.

These strategies created a space for diverse voices and unique solutions, highlighting the power of embracing different perspectives.

The talk ends with a call to action: challenge Sameness in your own life, whether at work or in your community, and actively create environments where diversity and individuality can thrive, fostering a more dynamic and inclusive future.
