Are you not entertained?
I was scrolling socials recently and I saw an extremely large influencer who is known for making extraordinarily toxic content aimed at the black community, bragging about how she taught her boyfriend how to also manipulate social media for money.
Needless to say it pissed me off. I knew that their damaging content was made solely to gain clicks but for someone to be so keenly aware of what they were doing without regard for the consequences, well.
Rather than fume or get into a comment section war, I do what I always do when I feel passionate about a topic. I create.
Alas here we are.
With that being said: Do you ever feel like social media is manipulating your emotions? That’s not a coincidence.
Platforms thrive on outrage, keeping you engaged by feeding you rage-inducing content. But you don’t have to play their game.
In this video, we’ll break down:
- How social media exploits your emotions for profit
- The importance of media literacy to recognize manipulation
- Strategies to become a free thinker and curate a healthier media diet
Reclaim your attention. Take back control. This is the attention economy, know your clicks, shares, likes, and views are powerful.
Am I shooting myself in the foot, posting this ahead of the biggest annual marketing event of the American fiscal year? Sure. But maybe just maybe, it'll still be able to reach more people and increase our collective media literacy. Anyway, What’s your number one tip for avoiding social media manipulation?
Disclaimer about tools:
In this video I offer the suggestion to use .gov sites directly, but I filmed this before President Elon got into office and so now I suggest that if you do want to use .gov websites, go into it with the understanding that we have a VP who doesn't see a problem with lying and prefers no fact checking.
That's just the reality of the situation.
