I hiked my first long distance backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail in 1990. The trail is a little over 2100 miles long, and over the past 3 decades, I've hiked more than 5000 miles along the trail, but I've never finished the trail, in fact I've never even set foot in the state of Maine. Spending an extended period of time backpacking on the AT can be extremely rewarding, and even a transformative experience. It’s not glamorous, and sometimes it’s not easy, but it can be amazing. Hiking on the AT was really the first thing in life I ever did by myself, and it sorta set the tone for the rest of my life.
