The first activity of my 2-hour cultural experience at the Samoa Cultural Center begins with learning about the traditional art of making a Mailo plate.
The coconut tree holds a very special place in Samoan culture and everyday life. Known as a “tree of life,” almost every part of the coconut has a purpose — from food and drink to materials used for tools, shelter, and traditional crafts. The leaves are carefully prepared and woven into useful items, including beautiful traditional plates like the Mailo.
This first activity was a wonderful introduction to Samoan traditions, showing the skill, patience, and connection to nature that has been passed down through generations. Watching the Mailo plate being created gave a deeper appreciation for the importance of the coconut in Samoan life and culture.
