War broke out between Iran and Iraq in 1980. Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini went head to head in a conflict that proved to be one of the deadliest of the 20th century, with chemical weapons being used as well as WWI-style trench warfare. Starting with an invasion of Iran, the war soon moved into Iraqi soil; before devolving into a deadly stalemate that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides. The two combatants fought a war for the very existence of their regimes. All the while the international community watched with bated breath, as the Persian Gulf, the home of much of the world’s supply of oil, became engulfed in war.
